Sausages, Corn And Egg

Sheryl loves corn on the cob, which is in season at the moment.

We decided to have the corn with sausages wrapped in bacon. There were not many sausages, so we each had a fried egg with our sausages and corn.

Spinach Pizza With Feta And Egg Salami And Pepperoni Pizza With Egg

Sheryl had a late meeting, so we had something quick and easy for dinner.

I heated up two frozen pizzas: a spinach pizza topped with feta and an egg, for Sheryl, and a salami and pepperoni pizza, topped with an egg, for me.

Feta Baked In Filo, Bread Roll And Salad

Tonight for dinner we made feta baked in filo pastry, flavoured with fenugreek and sesame seeds, and served with some honey on top, served with a green salad and home-made malt and walnut bread-rolls.

I got in trouble for forgetting to add avocado to the salad.

Capellini With Meatballs In Spicy Tomato Sauce

Today I made meatballs (a big batch so I was able to freeze half for another day).

I served them with capellini (thin, quick cooking spaghetti) and a spicy tomato sauce.

I added some cumin and some fennel seeds to the meatballs.

It wa excellent.

Today I made blueberry pancakes for brunch. I even remembered to add cinnamon.

They were good, and extra fluffy.

Veg. Quesadillas With Veg. Chili

For our dinner tonight Sheryl made quesadillas (refried beans and cheese), which we ate with some vegetarian chili (from the freezer), guacamole and sour cream.

It tasted great, but for some reason the refried beans were wetter than usual, which made the quesadillas soft, so it was difficult to pick them up once there was chili on them.

For brunch today I made toasted sandwiches with mature cheddar and branston pickle.

For tonight's dinner I cooked pasta (penne) with mint, zucchini and ricotta.

My Four Cheeses Pizza With Anchovies And Capers Sheryl's Spinach Pizza With Feta And Egg

This evening, Sheryl was late home from work because of a late meeting, so I heated up some frozen pizzas.

Sheryl had her usual of a spinach pizza topped with feta and an egg; I had a quattro formagi topped with anchovies and capers.

Sea Bass With Kohlrabi And Tartar Sauce

For our evening repast I cooked sea bass braised in white wine, served with kohlrabi and home-made tartar sauce.

I think I am going to give up cooking real fish for Sheryl. The sea bass was cooked just right, so that the flesh came easily off the bones (which were left attached to the skeleton); I even filleted Sheryl's fish for her, like in some restaurants. Even so, she complained bitterly about bones in the fish, and wasted a lot. From now on, only pre-filleted fish (salmon, or tuna or swordfish steaks) for her.

Caesar Salad With Chicken And Bread Roll

For tonight's dinner I made a Caesar salad with mustard and tarragon chicken, which we ate with home-made malt and walnut bread-rolls.

As usual, I made two batches of Caesar salad dressing: one without anchovies, for Sheryl, and the other with anchovies, for me. There was a lot of dressing (I used three egg-yolks), although it could have had more garlic.

It was really delicious.

Fleischpflanzerl With Mash And Corn

Tonight I cooked Fleischpflanzerl (a meat patty made with minced beef and pork, known as Frikadelle in Northern Germany), mashed potatoes and sweet corn.

The Fleischpflanzerl were great (I added some fennel seeds, like in Italian sausage), although one of them broke up on serving.

Sheryl wanted corn on the cob, but couldn't find any, so ended up buying corn in a jar (not the usual canned brand), which was dreadful.

It is so easy, and always tasty.

Eggs Benedict With Bacon Bread Roll With Butter And Marmite

For our brunch today we treated ourselves to Eggs Benedict with Bacon, served on home-made malt and walnut bread-rolls.

It was lovely, but too unhealthy for every day.

I ate my second bread-roll with some butter and marmite; Sheryl had peanut butter, honey and cinnamon on hers.

Asparagus Risotto

For tonight's dinner I cooked a risotto with green asparagus, sun-dried tomatoes and artichokes.

It was so delicious!

Pasta Pesto With Cherry Tomatoes

For dinner tonight I made pasta (fusilli) pesto, made with green (basil) pesto.

I served it with some cherry tomatoes, and, of course, some parmesan garnish.

Sheryl used pistachios in the pesto, which was a nice variation.

Green Salad With Filo Wrapped Feta

For tonight's dinner we made a green salad with feta wrapped in filo pastry and baked.

We ate it with home-made malt and walnut bread-rolls.

Cheese And Tomato Toasties

For brunch today I made toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches: one made with the last of the Halvarti cheese from last night's dinner, and one made with Gruyère.

Chorizo Burgers

For dinner we tried something new: chorizo burgers. using a recipe Sheryl found online.

The buns were some of the last batch of home-made malt and walnut bread-rolls; the burger patties were a mixture of beef mince, chopped chorizo, chopped jalapeño pepper and cumin powder; there was also a sauce made with Halvarti cheese, bechamel sauce and jalapeño pepper; there was a layer of sliced avocado.

They were excellent, and we will definitely make them again.

For brunch today I made poached eggs on toast.

Leftover Enchiladas Verde

The second attempt to deliver our new fridge/freezer was successful, so we decided to use the frozen chicken enchiladas verde that were already partly defrosted.

We ate them, as usual, with sour cream and guacamole.

They were lovely.

Fake Meat Tacos

For tonight's dinner we made hard-shell tacos with fake meat.

We were missing a couple of ingredients, and the fake meat was a brand we hadn't tried before, but the tacos were nevertheless good.

Crumpets

Today is a public holiday in Bavaria, so Sheryl was at home for brunch.

I made crumpets, which we ate with either butter, cheese or jam.

They worked very well this time: they didn't stick to the pan, and they were full of holes as they are meant to be.

Because we were expecting the delivery of our new fridge/freezer tomorrow (sometime between 08:00 and 14:00) we wanted to have a dinner that didn't create much washing up, and that used something from the freezer.

Tonight, for dinner, I cooked pasta (tortiglioni) with mint, zucchini and ricotta: quick, easy and always tasty.

Tomato Galette

For dinner tonight we made a cherry tomato galette.

For some reason I had a lot of trouble rolling out the pastry (probably because I over-chilled it, and because it was too dry). but I managed it eventually, and the galette was great.

We usually have a little of the galette left over, which I eat the next day for brunch, but today we finished it all.

For today's brunch Sheryl made two kinds of scones: cheese scones and plain scones.

We ate the cheese scones with butter; we ate the plain scones with clotted cream and jam.

Our regular curry evening was on Saturday this week.

I made a Beef Madras. I made it a little less spicy this time, so we decided to eat it with naan bread.

For our brunch today we ate raw vegetables and crisps/chips (Jura cheese crisps from Muji) with French onion dip, in an attempt to compensate for the amount of meat we have been eating lately.

Four Cheeses Pizza With Italian Sausage

For dinner we heated up two frozen 4-cheeses pizzas, which I topped with Italian sausage.

They were lovely; this is Sheryl's favourite kind of pizza.

Failed Chicken Wings Green Salad

For dinner Sheryl made spicy chicken wings; I made a green salad to eat with the wings, and we had some home-made malt and walnut bread-rolls that I made in the afternoon.

The chicken wings were not a success (the breadcrumbs fell off); when Sheryl made them before, they were good, but she has since lost the recipe.

The salad was also not great for some reason, but at least the bread-rolls were good.

Kebabs

Today we went shopping at Das Einstein shopping mall.

Before the shopping, we had lunch at Ke Bazza, in the mall.

We ate doner kebabs: mine with chicken and cheese; Sheryl's with falafel, humus and cheese.

They were excellent.

Leftover Salmon And Asparagus Quiche

Tonight I heated up the leftover salmon and asparagus quiche for dinner (but still no potatoes!) for dinner.

For dessert we ate some more of the chocolate brownies.

L'Angelo Beef Carpaccio L'Angelo Pasta With Scampi And Lobster

For dinner we again went our, this time to our favorite local Italian restaurant: L'Angelo Della Pizza.

Sheryl had assured me that we wouldn't need to reserve a table, because most people were out of town for Whitsun. She was wrong, and we only just got the last available table.

We shared a starter of beef carpaccio, with some bread to mop up the olive oil and balsamico.

For our main courses, Sheryl ordered her usual rigatoni quattro formaggi (four cheeses - sorry, no photo).

I ordered the tagliatelle scampi in lobster sauce. In fact, it was more than just lobster sauce; there was a large chunk of lobster tail on my plate. It was delicious, and I will definitely order it again.

We drank a bottle of Nero d'Avola and a bottle of sparkling water with our dinner.

The service was fast and friendly, as always, and we had a great evening.

Rischart Flammkuchen Rischart Kaiserschmarrn With Apricot Jam

Today we went out for brunch to the Rischart Café on Marienplatz.

We shared a Flammkuchen (a German pizza - very thin), with goat cheese and honey. It was excellent.

After a pause, we shared a plate of Kaiserschmarrn (pancake pieces normally served with fruit purée or jam) with apricot jam, It was nice (we have had better).

For tonight's dinner I made a quiche with salmon and green asparagus.

It was really good.

Normally, we eat quiche with sautéd potatoes, but Sheryl forgot to buy potatoes.

For dessert we ate some of the chocolate brownies that Sheryl made a couple of days ago.

French Toast And Berries

Sheryl has the week off work, so we will be having different food for our brunches than I would have if I was alone.

Today she made us French toast, which we ate with berries (blueberries and strawberries) and maple syrup.

Sheryl also had some pieces of pecan nut on some of her French toast; I tried the same, but the nuts all fell of as I tried to eat the French toast, so I gave up on that idea.

Sheryl made chicken enchiladas verde for our dinner tonight. She also made us margaritas.

We ate the enchiladas with sour cream and guacamole (bought). They were lovely.

I made crêpes for our brunch today, which we ate with berries (blueberries, blackberries and strawberries) and maple syrup.

For tonight's dinner I made Spicy Rigatoni Vodka. We ate it with some Italian sausage (which we recently discovered in our local supermarket, so Sheryl doesn't need to make it herself anymore).

It was delicious.

Treacle Pudding And Cream

For this week's curry evening I made a thali with some frozen leftover curries: a butter chicken, a chicken badam pasanda and a turkey satay.

We ate the thali with some onion kulcha that we had in the freezer.

For dessert we ate some treacle puddings that we ordered online a long time ago (they needed to be used up) from a supplier of English goods. We ate them with some cream.

Asparagus Risotto

Tonight I cooked an asparagus risotto. I also added some sun-dried tomatoes; I planned to also add some artichokes, but the jar had gone mouldy.

We ate the risotto with some chili flakes sprinkled over it.

The risotto was awesome (we ate every scrap), and I definitely want to cook it again before the asparagus season ends.

Tonight we decided to go out for dinner. We went down the road to Sushi Cent.

We ordered our usual: a Bogenhausen platter (a selection of sushi and sashimi), and an Unagi Temaki (a hand roll with eel), plus a bottle of pinot grigio and a bottle of sparkling water.

For some reason, we received two of the Temaki (they charged us for both). Sheryl will not eat eel, so I ate both, and we were then not quite able to finish the rest of the meal.

The meal was lovely, and service was, as usual, fantastic, but prices keep creeping up (and not just due to the extra Temaki).

Sheryl's Spinach Pizz aWith Vegan Feta My Salami And Pepperoni Pizza

Sheryl had a late meeting, so we ate late. We opted for something quick and easy for dinner: frozen pizzas.

Sheryl had her usual spinach pizza, topped with some vegan fake feta (which doesn't melt in the oven); I had a salami and pepperoni pizza.

Caesar Salad And Baguette

Tonight I made a Caesar salad, which we ate with mustard and tarragon chicken and a baguette with garlic butter from the supermarket (not as good as home made garlic butter).

Spicy Lasangne

For our dinner tonight I made a spicy lasagne (a lasagne bolognese with sambal oelek added to the bolognese) with the last layer of mascarpone.

I had some trouble making the pasta: it was too dry, and I had to make a second batch. Nevertheless, it was gorgeous.

We had some more of Sheryl's mini coconut key lime pies for dessert.

For today's brunch we made croque madame.

Mexican Pizza Painkiller

Tonight Sheryl had a caving for Mexican food, so she made us Mexican "pizzas" (a Taco Bell copycat recipe).

Instead of the usual margaritas, she made us painkiller cocktails (the recipe is on the cup, or here).

The Mexican pizzas were the best she has yet made (moist, due to there being lots of sauce, guacamole and sour cream).

For dessert Sheryl had made some mini coconut key lime pies, some of which we ate topped with whipped cream. They were excellent; I will try to add the recipe to my recipes page, soon.

Avocado Toast

For today's brunch we had avocado on toast. The avocado was surprisingly good.

Sheryl, as usual, ate hers with malt vinegar and "everything but the bagel" seasoning; I ate mine with balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper.

Pasta Cacio e Pepe Canales

Tonight I cooked linguine Cacio e Pepe, which I served garnished with some cherry tomatoes (and grated pecorino and parmesan cheese, of course).

It was outstanding!

For dessert we had some canalés, given to us by our neighbour Isabelle.

Cheese And Crackers

As expected after our brunch today, we were not very hungry for dinner, so we just had some cheese and crackers this evening.

Sheryl found a new flavour of Tuc crackers at the store (bacon flavour); they were awesome!

9th May 2024 - Hofbräukeller, Munich.

Today we went for brunch with our neighbours Isabelle and Markus, and their children Erik and Ann Sophia, to the Hofbräukeller beer garden.

Markus, Sheryl and I drank some beers; Isabelle and the kids drank sparkling water.

We had a couple of plates of Obatzda and some giant pretzels. Isabelle order some sausages for her family. We ordered a couple of Fleischpflanzerl with potato salad to share.

We found a table close to the playground, so the children were able to occupy themselves while we chatted.

Samosas And Onion Bhajis Chicken Bhoti Masala And Naan

Tonight we met our friends Jonathan and Tracy for dinner at the Indian Village restaurant.

We had a lovely time.

We ordered vegetable samosas and onion bhajis to share between all four of us, as starters. There were also some papadams.

As mains, Sheryl ordered lamb palak (spinach), and I ordered chicken bhoti masala; I don't remember what Jonathan and Tracy ordered.

There was some rice, but mostly we ate naan bread with the main courses.

Everything was fantastic!

We stayed very late; I apologised to our waiter for keeping him so long after closing time.

Califlower Cheese And Bread-Roll

Tonight I cooked cauliflower cheese, which was lovely.

We like to eat this with some bread-rolls (to mop up any extra sauce), but we were out of my home-made rolls, so I bought some Semel (Bavarian for bread.roll) at a local bakery; they were dreadful.

For tonight's dinner we made club sandwiches (with turkey instead of chicken).

We ate them with some balsamic vinegar crisps/chips.

Cinnamon Roll And Cream-Cheese Icing

For brunch today Sheryl heated up some cinnamon rolls (a Cinnabon copycat recipe) that were in the freezer from last time she baked cinnamon rolls.

We ate them with cream-cheese icing (frosting).

They were lovely.

4th May 2024 - Wirtshaus Zur Brez'n, Munich.

Käse Spätzle And Salad Nurenberger, Sauerkraut And Pretzel

After the comedy show we went looking for dinner, and ended up at the Wirtshaus Zur Brez'n. This is somewhere that I went often when I first came to Munich, but , wow, it has gone downhill since then. We won't be going back.

Sheryl had some sausages (Nurenberger Bratwust) with sauerkraut and a pretzel (the Bauernbrod that they usually serve with this is rye bread, to which Sheryl is allergic).

I had Käsespätzle (a German take on Mac and Cheese), served with a salad. I drank a Weißbier with my food.

My Käsespätzle was lukewarm, and not very good.

Sheryl's sausages were better, but the sauerkraut gave her indigestion and the pretzel was rather stale (surprising, since Brez'n means pretzel).

The service was not great (we had to wait ages to pay) and Sheryl's red wine was also not very good.

That whole area near Munchener Feiheit has gone to seed. At every establishment there are lots of tourists, and people to whom being seen is more important than the quality of food and service.

Tonight I heated up some frozen dim sum: some glutinous rice balls, some shau mei, some gyoza, some yakitori sticks, some leek dumplings, some breaded prawns and and a BBQ pork bun for me.

Poached Salmon, Mashed Potatoes, Sweetcorn And Tartar Sauce

I cooked salmon poached in white wine, mashed potatoes (flavoured with a little nutmeg), sweetcorn and home-made tartar sauce.

The frozen salmon has been getting smaller by the month, over the last couple of years, so the salmon pieces were tiny. Also, we only had a small can of sweetcorn.

Nevertheless, it was very tasty.

There were not many mushrooms, so there was less sauce than usual, but it was still lovely.

For tonight's dinner we made puff pastry rolls with Parma ham, Gruyère cheese and green asparagus.

Croissant And Cheeses

For brunch today Sheryl went to the Saphir bakery across the street and bought croissants and a pain au chocolat to share.

We ate the croissants with a selection of cheeses.

Prawn Pakoras Samosas And Veg. Pakoras

Tonight we had invited our neighbours Ushi and Pascale, and Pascale's boyfriend Andi, for a curry evening.

For starters I made some prawn pakoras, and we bought some vegetable pakoras and samosas from the nearby Swagat restaurant. My prawn pakoras were very small (I bought the wrong sized prawns), but were good, and were all eaten (there was a little of the bought starters left over).

For our main course I made a butter chicken, a chicken badam pasanda and some turmeric rice. We also had lots of naan bread and onion kulcha, also bought from the Swagat.

For dessert I made a large rhubarb and strawberry crumble, with a choice of vanilla ice-cream or cream to go with it.

Sheryl was concerned that, after the starters and curries, the heavy dessert would be too much, but there was only enough left for Sheryl and I to have for dessert one day later in the week.

I was worried that the butter chicken would be too spicy for our guests, but it was fine, and everyone had at leat a second portion.

We had told Pascale that they could bring their dog (Wanda) with them. She was beautifully behaved the whole time (except for her penchant for chewing up wine corks).

It was a really fun evening.

Mixed Toasties

For brunch today I made toasted sandwiches: one with mature cheddar and Branston pickle and one with goat camembert and tomato. We shared the toasties.

This afternoon/evening, Sheryl had a work event with her team, with tapas and drinks, so she wasn't really hungry at dinner time.

She brought me a take-away burger (a Spanish burger - the special of the month) from the Hamburgerei Zwei, and a portion of chips (French fries) and truffle mayonnaise for each of us.

The burger was lovely, although very messy to eat.

Tonight I heated up frozen pizzas for dinner.

Sheryl had a mozzarella and tomato pizza (for a change from her usual spinach pizza), topped with an egg, and I had a salami and pepperoni pizza, also topped with an egg.

Sheryl had dinner with the other people in her group of her training course, so I was on my own for dinner.

I made myself an omelette, which I ate with a burger bun.

For some reason half of the cheese (goat camembert) fell out of the omelette as I was serving it, but was still lovely.

For our dinner tonight Sheryl made corned beef rolls, and I made an Olive Garden Salad.

Sheryl wrapped the corned beef rolls differently this time, so they look more like Cornish pasties than rolls, but they still tasted great.

For today's brunch I made banana pancakes. I remembered to add cinnamon this time.

Sheryl ate hers with maple syrup (then nutella on the last two); I ate mine with butter (then peanut butter on the last two).

20th April 2024 - Restaurant Ludwig Zwei, National Theater, Munich.

Kaefe rRaspberry Tart

In the break during the ballet we tried something new: we had booked at the Restaurant Ludwig Zwei (owned by Käfer).

The usual routine is that, during the interval, everyone head for one of several bars, where they wait a long time for a drink which then has to be guzzled down in the limited time remaining.

We, in contrast, went to our reserved table (although it took a bit of effort to find out our table) to find our drinks and dessert waiting. We will definitely do this again next time we go to the ballet.

Sheryl ordered a red wine (Nero D'Avolo) and a sparkling water, and I ordered a gin and tonic (with ice in a separate glass). We shared a dessert of a raspberry tart, which was very good.

Sheryl's Schnitzel And Fries My Asparagus And Potatoes

Before the ballet tonight we went, as usual to Zum Franziskaner for dinner.

Despite the restaurant being very busy, service was very quick, and we finished dinner with about an hour to spare.

Sheryl had a veal schnitzel. Normally this is served with rye bread, to which Sheryl is allergic, so she got chips (French fries) instead.

I ordered a pice of grilled filet of beef, which came with (white!) asparagus Hollandaise sauce and boiled potatoes.

Sheryl drank a red wine (Merlot) and a sparkling water; I drank a Weißbier.

Sheryl's schnitzel and chips was very good.

My asparagus and potatoes were also good, but my filet was only mediocre: there were several pieces of gristle in the meat (unheard of in a filet), and it was not particularly tasty. I think the beef came from a cow that died of old age.

Scrambled Eggs With Brioche Bun Scrambled Eggs On Toast

For our brunch today I made scrambled eggs (properly scrambled, not like the stuff you get in restaurants and hotels which is more like an omelette).

I ate mine on toast, and Sheryl ate hers on her last brioche burger bun.

We then tried eating a mango that we bought a few days ago, but part of it was already rotting, and the rest wasn't properly ripe and tasted of nothing, so we put it in the bin (garbage).

For our weekly curry evening I cooked a Beef Madras and turmeric rice.

Sheryl told me that it was right at her limit for spiciness. I thought it was perfect.

For dessert we ate some Aunty's brand "spotted dick" (a type of steamed pudding with raisins) that we have had in storage for a while (needed to be eaten up). We ate it with cream.

Sheryl had a very late meeting at work, so we had something quick and easy for dinner: pizzas from the freezer.

Tonight for dinner I made a turkey pot-pie.

We had some white cabbage left over from the slaw we made with the fish tacos on Saturday, so I made some braised cabbage. I added some caraway seeds (a standard ingredient in cabbage salad and sauerkraut) for flavour, but it seems that Sheryl really doesn't like them.

For tonight's dinner we cooked a cherry tomato galette. The tomatoes look a little burnt, but it tasted fine.

For dessert we ate some more of the Limoncello Tiramisu.

Rosi's Cappuccino, Orange Juice And Bread Rosi's Amerika Breakfast

After we had finished going round the "Dali Spellbound" exhibition, we got brunch at Rosi's on Rosenheimer Straße.

It was very busy, but we were able to get a table. Service was a little slow because of the number of customers, but that was only to be expected.

We both ordered cappuccinos (yes, I know, the plural of cappuccino is actually cappuccini) and the Amerika breakfast, which includes a juice of your choice (we chose orange juice).

The eggs (more like omelettes than scrambled, as in virtually every restaurant and hotel) and bacon were good, as was the bread; the pancakes (covered in berries) were dreadful (cold, dry and hard - they tasted like they were cooked 3 hours earlier) and were served with some weird nougat sauce rather than maple syrup.

Even so, we had a nice meal, and the service was friendly.

Margarita Fish Tacos

For tonight's dinner we made fish (salmon) tacos. The soft-shell tacos were filled with the chipotle-marinaded fish, slaw, radishes, avocado creme and feta.

The tacos were gorgeous!

Sheryl made us margaritas to drink with dinner.

For dessert Sheryl made limoncello tiramisu, using some of her home-made lemon curd. We each had two bowls of the dessert.

Fried Brioche Duck And Truffle Paté On Fried Brioche

We had some of a loaf of brioche bread leftover from when Sheryl made French toast recently, so we decided to recreate something that Sheryl had at a restaurant: paté (duck and truffle) on fried brioche.

It was delicious (although very unhealthy). I discovered that brioche is very hard to fry (it goes from underdone to burnt in seconds).

I had some mustard on mine; Sheryl didn't.

We went out to Sushi Cent (2 minutes walk from our apartment) for dinner.

Tonight for dinner I cooked a turkey redang and rice.

Sheryl was quite late home from work, so the curry was cooked too long, causing the sauce to separate, although it still tasted great.

It was all lovely, although eating out has become very expensive over the last 4 years.

Rhubarb And Strawberry Crumble

I made a risotto with butternut squash, artichokes and sun-dried tomatoes for dinner. We ate it garnished with chili flakes.

Rhubarb season has started, so I made a dessert of strawberry and rhubarb crumble/cobbler. Sheryl ate hers with vanilla ice-cream, and I ate mine with cream.

Weißbier And Obatzda Obatzda

Today the weather was great, so, as Sheryl was on vacation, we went downtown the the Schneider Bräuhaus for brunch. We sat at a table outside.

We each drank a Weißbier (wheat beer): for Sheryl a Tap #1 (a lighter version) and for me a Tap #7 (original). Part of Sheryl's plan was to buy some more Love Beer (a Weißbier with passion fruit), but due to renovations at the brewery it and several other beers were unavailable.

For food, Sheryl ordered some Obatzda and a pair of Weißwurst (white sausage), and I ordered Fleischpflanzerl and potato salad (Bavarian style, with oil and vinegar instead of mayonnaise).

Weißwurst is normally eaten with sweet mustard, but at the Schneider Bräuhaus it has too much horse radish added for Sheryl's taste, so she stopped off at supermarket down the street to buy some without horse radish. Now, at home we have two open jars and a tube of sweet mustard.

The hot dishes were both delicious, but the Obatzda wasn't as good as usual.

Devilled Eggs Easter Prosecco

Because we had brunch with Isabelle and Markus on Easter Sunday, we moved out Easter dinner to today.

As a starter to eat while the main course was cooking in the oven, we had a few devilled eggs with some prosecco (Sheryl is very allergic to Champagne).

For our main course I cooked a roast duck with stuffing (bread, mushrooms, dried figs and Italian sausage), roast potatoes and carrots, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce and gravy (made with red wine, mustard and some hot sauce - none of that gravy from a packet in our house).

We both managed a second plate of the main course, but then were totally full.

With dinner we drank the second bottle of Amarone wine that I bought in December, which was outstanding.

Puff Pastry Bundles And Cheeses Baked Eggs And Fruit Salad

This morning we had an invitation downstairs to Isabelle and Markus' for brunch.

We made some baked eggs with bacon and cheese; some puff pastry bundles with Parma ham, Gruyère and asparagus; and some carrot cup cakes (some decorated to look like the tail-end of bunnies burrowing into the cup-cake).

Isabelle and Markus provided bread, cheeses, some smoked salmon and fruit salad.

There was prosecco, water and coffee.

Their kids, Erik and Ann Sofia, both went straight to the cup cakes, only having bread later.

We all ate well, and had a good chat about various topics.

Both we and Isabelle and Markus, were caught out by the clocks going forward last night, giving us an hour less for preparing food.

For dessert I made a crumble (cobbler) using pears, an apple and a couple of plums that needed to be used up. I ate mine wit cream, and Sheryl ate hers with vanilla ice-cream.

Cheesecake With Lemon Curd

For dinner I made a Caesar salad. Normally, I put croutons in a Caesar salad, but this time I served it with home-made bread-rolls (the last of the sourdough rolls, plus some malt and walnut rolls). I made some mustard and tarragon turkey to top the salad with.

Caesar salad dressing is supposed to contain anchovies, which I love but Sheryl hates, so I made two batches of dressing (one with anchovies and one without).

The salad was really great, and we ate every scrap.

For dessert we ate some of the cheesecake, topped with home-made lemon curd which Sheryl made yesterday, which was delicious. Sadly she took the leftover cheesecake to work for her colleagues, so I won't get any more of it until she makes another.

Toasted Sandwiches

The plan for brunch was that I should cook blueberry pancakes, but Sheryl decided to make a cheesecake which was still in the oven when I needed to make brunch (I need the oven to keep the pancakes warm while I cook more).

Fuyuan Shao Mei Fuyuan Fish Filets With Sesame

After seeing the movie (Dune: Part Two) this afternoon we went to Fuyuan, a Taiwanese restaurant nearby, recommended by our neighbour Isabelle, for dinner (we had reserved a table).

We started with a couple of dishes from the Dim Sum menu: Shao Mei (huge and very tasty) and fried fish filets with sesame seeds (delicious).

We then ate Peking duck: lots of meat, and the restaurant's own Peking duck sauce. It was so much better than when we make Peking duck at home.

We each drank a couple of glasses of Montepulciano red wine and some sparkling water with dinner.

Everything was gorgeous (the second best Dim Sum that we have ever eaten), which is presumably why there were so many Taiwanese or Chinese customers there.

We will definitely go there again.

Tonight I made a green salad. Sheryl made feta baked in filo (with fenugreek, olive oil, honey and sesame seeds). We served it with burger buns.

Sheryl had left a post-it note on the feta to ensure that I didn't use it in the salad as I did a week ago.

Tonight we went for something quick and simple for dinner: I heated up two frozen pizzas.

Sheryl had a 4-cheeses pizza topped with tuna and red onion. I had a salami, ham and mushroom pizza topped with red onion.

Beef Stew And Dumplings

For dinner tonight I cooked a beef stew with dumplings. We wanted to have a venison stew, but were unable to find venison anywhere.

The stew was flavoured with herbs (oregano, thyme, basil and tarragon), a beef stock cube, sambal oelek, mustard, red wine, tinned tomatoes and aceto balsamico.

The dumplings were flavoured with herbs (thyme and oregano) and spices (coriander and cardamom).

It was so good!

There was enough left over to freeze (except for the dumplings, which we mostly ate, and don't freeze well) for another meal.

Cheese And Date Scones

Sheryl made scones for our brunch today.

She made cheese scone, eaten with butter or goat camembert, and date scones, eaten with clotted cream and fig jam.

They were, as ever, delicious.

For dinner tonight we had a selection of Dim Sum from the freezer: glutinous rice balls wit peanut filling, shao mei, leek dumplings, pork gyoza, breaded prawn sticks, yakitori sticks, and for me, a barbecue pork bun.

Leftover Indian Starters Sheryl's Brioche Toast Brunch

For today's brunch I ate the leftover starters from the Indian Village: a small piece of samosa and two onion bhajis.

Sheryl felt that her stomach couldn't handle more spicy food, so she had toasted brioche bread with nutella and peanut butter. She also had a little of the Schmalz (dripping/lard) that Ushi gave us after dinner there.

Samosas Onion Bhajis And Sauces

We couldn't decide what curry I should cook for our regular curry evening, so in the end we decided to go out.

We went to the Indian Village, which has the best reviews of any Indian restaurant in Munich. We had been planning for a long time to go there with Jonathan and Tracy, who live close to the restaurant. Jonathan and Tracy were out of the country, so we went without them.

Sheryl had samosas to start (first checking that they contained no fresh paprika); I had onion bhajis. Both starters were excellent. This was the first time I had eaten proper onion bhajis in years and I was very impressed; Indian restaurants in Germany usually serve onion bhajis that are flat and taste quite different.

For our main courses, Sheryl ordered a murgh palak (chicken and spinach), and I ordered a jheenga (prawn) jalfrezi. Rice is included, but mostly we ate the garlic naan that we ordered.

We drank a bottle of Tempranillo red wine with dinner.

The meal was altogether outstanding: the food, the service and the decor (there was only one of the typical Indian "artworks" on the wall, and the rest of the decor was tasteful and pleasant). The meal was not cheap (we spent €127, plus a generous tip), but not bad for a gourmet dinner.

I wanted a whiskey after dinner, but they don't have any nice whiskeys, so I had a glass of the rum that our waiter recommended, which was really nice.

We will definitely go again soon, probably as soon as Jonathan and Tracy return from their vacation.

Tonight I heated up some frozen pizzas for dinner.

Sheryl had her usual spinach pizza topped with red onion, feta and an egg. I had a 4-cheeses pizza topped with anchovies, capers and red onion.

For dessert we had some of the roulade (Swiss Roll) that our neighbour brought back from a business trip to Singapore.

Tonight we had planned to have a salad with baked feta in filo pastry. Unfortunately I messed up, and used the feta (we only had one pack) in the salad (we usually put feta in our salads, and I was running on automatic), so we had to have something different.

We decided on a green salad and a tuna pasta salad, served with bread rolls, which was good.

There was enough tuna pasta salad for Sheryl's lunch the next day.

Gröstl Gröstl With Egg

For dinner tonight I cooked Tiroler Gröstl (you can find many recipes online, although mostly in German, and all a little different).

My Gröstl contained potatoes, sausages, spring onions (green onions) and snow peas (baby pea pods).

Gröstl is traditionally a dish made with leftovers. It is similar to the "bubble and squeak" eaten in England, but with more meat.

We ate it, as per tradition, with a fried egg on top.

It was lovely.

Spicy Rigatoni Vodka Cannoli Siciliani

For dinner tonight I cooked something new: Spicy Rigatoni Vodka (from a recipe I found on the Internet).

We had no rigatoni, so I used penne instead.

It turned out very well, and once I have fine-tuned the recipe I will add it to my recipes page.

For dessert we had another experiment: Cannoli Siciliani. We both found them a little dry (the cases are crispy), and will probably not buy them again.

BBQ Ribs With Salads And Bread Roll

As an experiment, Sheryl bought some ready made barbecue ribs (from Käfer) on Saturday. Tonight we ate them with a tomato and red onion salad, potato salad and home-made sourdough bread rolls.

The best that I can say is that they were OK. We had hoped that the ribs would be nearly as good as those we get at the Rusticana restaurant (after all Käfer is a premium brand); they were not, although they were at least very tender.

Also, our attempt to recreate the tomato salad that they serve at the Rusticana was not entirely successful.

The potato salad, however, was excellent.

We ate it garnished with chili flakes.

Toasted Sandwiches

For our brunch Sheryl had half of a grapefruit (I can't eat grapefruit because of the statins that I take, which is so unfair).

I then made toasted cheese (mature cheddar) and Branston pickle sandwiches.

I finished off with a mandarin, and Sheryl had a slice of toast with honey and cinnamon.

Tonight we were invited to our neighbours Ushi and Pascale's apartment for a Bavarian dinner. Pascale's boyfriend Andi was also there.

For starters there was a soup of cream and a little vinegar, containing sausages (Bratwurst) and garnished with chives. There were slices of baguette to eat with the soup. I have no idea what it is called, but it was delicious.

We took a couple of bottles of Amarone, which is currently my favourite wine. I was unable to get two of the Masi Amarone, so the second bottle was another brand of Amarone (still good, but not quite as good as the Masi).

Also on the table was a jar of Schmalz (dripping) cooked with apple, which we snacked on with slices of baguette before the main course.

The main course was a slow roasted rack of pork, which was served with Knödel (Bavarian dumplings), gravy and purple carrots (the carrots look like purple cabbage - they were lovely). Everything was so tasty, and the pork was incredibly tender.

After a pause, during which a third bottle of wine (a Merlot) was opened, we had dessert: Bavarian cream (Bavaroise - one of my favourite desserts) served with berries and a berry sauce.

After dinner Pascale, Andi and I drank a few glasses of whisky (Laphroaig, provided by Andi, and then 16-year-old Jura that I took). Meanwhile Ushi and Sheryl had Limoncello (Sheryl said it was better than the Limoncello that we had at home, which she brought back from Rome).

We had a wonderful time, and were stuffed afterwards.

Ushi gave us her second jar of Schmalz with apple to take home, which was very kind of her.

We went out for dinner today, since it was Valentine's day.

We had glasses of pink prosecco at home before dinner, and then went to Sushi Cent for our meal.

I had an Unagi (a hand roll containing cooked freshwater eel) as a starter. Sheryl ordered some sushi and some sashimi (which includes a bowl of rice). For my main course I had duck donburi, which also includes a bowl of rice.

It was all delicious, although I had trouble finishing the mountain of meat in my main course.

Steak Tartar With Rye Bread Steak Tartar With Fries

Because we were going to the ballet tonight, we had an early dinner at Zum Franziskaner with Isabelle and Markus.

I had steak tartar, which is served with rye bread. Sheryl is allergic to rye, so she ordered Pommes/chips/French-fries and gave me her bread. Isabelle ordered a cheese platter, and Markus ordered trout (served with boiled potatoes and salad).

Sheryl drank red wine (a Merlot) with her food; I drank Weissbier (wheat beer); Markus drank Helles (lager); and Isabelle drank water.

The steak tartar was good. Markus' trout looked perfectly cooked; the bone separated easily and cleanly from the fish.

We all enjoyed our dinner.

This morning we were invited downstairs by Isabelle and Markus for brunch.

I cooked a quiche (like a quiche Lorraine, but with leek instead of red onions, and with mushrooms added). It proved very popular, especially with their son Erik.

Sheryl made some chocolate and raspberry macarons (not to be confused with macaroons, which I like much more than macarons), which were also gobbled up.

Isabelle and Markus provided a selection of bread, gravad lax, a lovely cheese platter and fruit salad.

We took presents for the kids: a belated Christmas present for Erik, and birthday and Christmas presents for Anne-Sophia. I am not sure whether Erik looks so pleased because of the food (he ate a lot of quiche) or the present.

For tonight's dinner I cooked butter chicken, served with garlic naan bread.

It was so good to be able to eat something spicy after our Christmas in Chicago.

It was nice to have something that was not take-away.

Spinach Pizza With Feta, Egg And Hot Sauce Ham Pepperoni And Salami Pizza

After our overnight flight we didn't want anything complex for dinner, so we heated up some frozen pizzas.

Sheryl had a spinach pizza topped with feta, egg and hot sauce.

I had a pepperoni and salami pizza (no egg).

Aircraft Breakfast

Breakfast on our United flight was some kind of bread-roll (containing an egg).

It was fairly nondescript, but at least not downright offensive like dinner.

Inedible Aircraft Stir Fry

Our dinner on the flight was utterly dreadful.

We were sitting about 3 rows from the back of the plane, so by the time the food service reached us, there was only one choice: vegetable stir-fry.

As expected, dinner contained bell-pepper (paprika), so Sheryl couldn't eat it.

I managed two mouthfuls. It had a nasty chemical taste, and contained no flavourings (some soy sauce, hoi sin sauce, oyster sauce, or even teriyaki sauce would improved it).

So Called Club Sandwich And Guinness

Today was our flight home. Ashley took us to the airport.

We, of course, had ample time after check-in, so we found a bar near our departure gate and had something to eat (because we correctly assumed that the food on the flight would not be good). I had a so-called club sandwich, which was edible but not good. I had a Guinness with my food.

Spaghetti And Meat Balls, Plus Chicken And Broccoli Fettuccine Alfredo

Today we went to Marc and Theresa's house for our belated New Year's Eve celebration.

I made spaghetti and meat balls (although I had to leave out the sambal because so many of Sheryl's family don't like spicy food), and Marc made fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and broccoli.

Marc has a completely different approach to fettuccine Alfredo, frying the chicken, then adding the broccoli to the pan, and finally adding the ingredients for the sauce, although the ingredients of the sauce are pretty much the same as my Alfredo sauce.

I tried some of both dishes, and they were both lovely.

I made a batch of malt and walnut bread rolls to have with dinner.

We took some of both pasta dishes back for Betty, who is still not feeling good.

Pizza With Caesar Salad

We celebrated New Year's Eve at Sheryl's mum's house, because so many of the family were sick.

We got a large pizza with Italian sausage. Sheryl and I also shared a Casar salad.

Today Sheryl tested positive for Covid-19, and so is isolating herself.

Betty and I agreed to go back to Biaggi's, where we went 5 days ago; my treat this time.

Betty had chicken parmesan and pasta; I had something from the specials because it had gorgonzola sauce.

I had to order some extra sauce, but apart from that, everything was perfect.

This evening we had a take-away dinner from Portillo's: a burger for Sheryl (after all, she hadn't had a burger for a whole 28 hours!); I had an Italian Beef Sandwich with cheese; we shared a portion of French fries.

Today we drove to a strip-mall. Sheryl was looking for a phone case for her new mobile phone, and we both wanted to shop for some books.

While there we had a late lunch: burgers and French fries at "Five Guys".

The burgers were actually very good, but there were no options for drinks except for soda.

Christmas Starter Of Puff-Pastry Wraps Christmas Day Amarone

As usual everyone expected Betty to prepare Christmas dinner (apart from the crock-pot beef), which she hates doing, so Sheryl volunteered us to cook instead.

Sheryl made puff-pastry wraps (filled with parma ham, Gruyère and green beans) for a starter. They were popular.

For the main course there was beef cooked in a slow cooker with carrots and potatoes, slow roasted ham, mashed potatoes, sweet corn, spicy baked beans (which Becky prepared, successfully recreating their dad's recipe).

American Buttermilk Biscuits

Ashley (Sheryl's niece) also promised to make biscuits (see the example photo to the right), but they did not materialise.

For dessert Sheryl made chocolate eclairs, which were a huge hit.

Sheryl, Al and I drank the bottle of Amarone (a gift from Sheryl's work) that we brought with us from Germany, and thereafter another Italian red (not as good as the Amarone).

Dinner was good, and everyone had plenty of what they liked to eat. The toughest part of cooking dinner was the usual issue of cooking in a strange kitchen; Betty doesn't even have a potato masher. and her selection of pans is very limited.

We ate dinner at about 15:30.

This morning, for brunch, we made croque madam for ourselves, and croque monsieur for Betty (who doesn't like egg).

Malbec At Biagi's My Stuffed Mushroom Starter At Biagi's

This evening there was a big family event: dinner organised at Biaggi's (the one at Deer Park) by Brenda (Sheryl's cousin) and Ozzie (Brenda's partner).

Apart from Brenda, Ozzie, Sheryl and me, Sheryl's mum Betty, her sister Theresa and family (Marc, Ashley, Brooklyn and Kaylin), and her sister Becky and family (Al and Aliah) were there.

I ordered a bottle of Malbec for the red wine drinkers (Sheryl, Al and me), which was excellent; we needed a second bottle later.

I ordered a starter: stuffed (with Italian sausage, spinach, and garlic) mushrooms (in white wine and butter sauce. It was delicious.

For our main courses, Sheryl ordered the Seafood Scampi (Aioli, Shrimp, Crab, Garlic-Oregano Breadcrumbs) and pasta; I ordered the Fettuccini with Lobster, which was gorgeous. Sheryl normally doesn't like lobster, but she tasted my meal and declared that it was tastier than hers.

After the main courses Al ordered a crème brûlée; I had a a taste, and it was very good. I was rather surprised not find panna cotta on the menu, given that Biaggi's is an Italian restaurant.

The decor of Biaggi's is nice, and the service was excellent.

It was a great evening out, and everyone ate well and had fun.

The Wrong Wine At Olive Garden Our Olive Garden Salad

This evening we (Sheryl. her mum Betty, her niece Kaylin, and I) went to the Olive Garden for dinner.

Sheryl and I ordered a bottle Pinot Noir to share. The waitress was fairly new in the job, and had previously only opened two other bottles of wine, and was struggling to open the bottle. We helped her to open the bottle, at which point we noticed that it was not the wine we had ordered; it tasted OK, so, to keep things simple, we drank the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Betty's meal didn't arrive with the rest of the plates, and the waitress instead gave hers to a neighbouring table who had arrived after us. Eventually, Betty's meal arrived.

The same neighbouring table had to re-order one of their meals, as it didn't arrive.

Betty ordered spaghetti Alfredo with chicken and broccoli, plus extra sauce, which was OK, although Olive Garden no longer use garlic in their Alfredo sauce.

Sheryl ordered veal parmesan with fettuccine; Kaylin ordered penne with chicken, and I ordered prawn pasta (which was too dry, so I ordered extra sauce).

Sheryl and I also ordered an Caesar Salad, which was also too dry.

In all, it was a very disappointing meal. I make better Caesar Salad and better Alfredo sauce, and there is always enough sauce when I make it.

By now, I am sure that the waitress has either learned to do her job better, or been fired.

Amuse-bouche Amarone

Today we went out to dinner to celebrate Sheryl's birthday.

We went to Le Stollberg, a French restaurant the the centre of town.

We treated ourselves to a bottle of Amarone wine, which was really good.

We began with a complimentary amuse-bouch. Sheryl enjoyed hers, but I hate beetroot.

Sheryl started with warm goose liver, and I had scallops.

For our main courses, Sheryl ordered halibut with hazelnuts, and I ordered saddle of venison.

Finally, Sheryl got a chocolate lava cake, whilst I had the cheese platter.

I had a glass of armagnac to finish off with.

We were both very pleased with every course (except for the beetroot in the amuse-bouch). The service was also excellent: fast, efficient and friendly. The restaurant is pleasantly decorated and fairly small.

We have been looking for a new good French restaurant for some time, and are happy that we seem to have found one.

Ashley wanted to try Currywurst (sausage with curry sauce) while in Germany, so we went to a kiosk at the Viktualienmarkt.

Currywurst is a Berlin specialty, so it is hard to find in Munich.

Sheryl and Ashley shared a plate of Currywurst and Bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes).

I had a Polish sausage in a bun.

We all drank glasses of Helles (standard lager), although you can see from the photo that it is cloudy like a Weißbier.

The beer was OK, but the sausages were not very good.

I had a so-called English Breakfast at the Café Brasserie Meuwese, a short walk from the hotel. It was good.

I went on a flying visit to Amsterdam. I arrived fairly late, so I ate dinner at the hotel: a Caesar salad with chicken and bread. It was actually excellent.

For today's breakfast we made croque madame.

It was wonderful, and Ashley enjoyed it greatly.

After we returned to Munich this evening, no-one felt like cooking. Instead we went to L'Angelo della Pizza.

Ashley ordered Penne Tocchino (penne with chicken in a cream sauce); Sheryl ordered pizza Parma (pizza topped with Parma ham and arugula) and I ordered a pizza diavolo (a pizza with spicy salami). It was all lovely.

Ashley drank a glass of house white wine, and Sheryl and I shared a bottle of Nero d'Avola.

Venison Goulash And Spätzle

Today we took a trip to see a couple of castles: Schloss Linderhof and Schloss Neuschwanstein.

I didn't want to deal with the walking, so while the ladies were walking up to Neuschwanstein I had lunch at the Restaurant Alpenstuben in Schwangau (the town below the castle). The ladies had eaten enough snacks in the car, and didn't get lunch. I had a venison goulash with Spätzle, which was very good.

Ashley told us that she likes butter chicken, so this evening she helped me cook a butter turkey.

A Selection Of Scones

For breakfast today Sheryl baked a selection of scones: some cheese scones (with Gruyère, parmesan and cheddar), some plain scones and some orange and cranberry scones.

This morning we took Ashley out to the Schneider Bräuhaus for a Bavarian breakfast of Weißwurst (white sausage), Weißbier (wheat beer), pretzels and Obatzda.

Ashley and Sheryl both drank "love beer" (flavoured with fruit of some kind), and I had an original Weißbier.

Sheryl cooked quesadillas (filled with home-made refried beans and cheese) for dinner. We ate them with sour cream and guacamole, plus a bit of hot sauce.

Avocado Toast Cheese And Marmite On Toast

For brunch today we had avocado toast. As usual, I had balsamic vinegar on mine, and Sheryl had malt vinegar on hers.

Sheryl recently bought a new larger bottle of Sarson's malt vinegar which doesn't have a top designed for sprinkling, so she ended up with too much vinegar, all in the wrong place.

We were both still hungry after two slices of avocado toast, so I had another piece of toast with butter, marmite and cheddar cheese; Sheryl had a slice of toast with peanut butter, honey and cinnamon.

We had planned to share a mango which we bought recently, but when we started peeling it, we discovered that it was no good, so I had a plum instead.

Clam Chowder And Bread-Rolls

For tonight's dinner I cooked a New England Clam Chowder, which we ate with home-made malt and walnut bread-rolls.

It was wonderful.

There were enough leftovers to put into the freezer for another day.

With the chowder we drank a bottle of pecorino white wine. Sheryl discovered this type of wine on her recent training course in Rome, where pecorino is the standard house wine at restaurants. I was really impressed with the wine and we will definitely be drinking it again.

This time I added fennel seeds to the meatballs, which really added to the flavour (now added to the recipe).

This evening there were four of us for dinner: Sheryl's mum Betty, Sheryl's aunt Frances, Sheryl and me.

We decided to go to Maggiano's for Italian food.

Betty and Frances ordered a soup starter, served with bread. The restaurant has a new Italian chef, so some of the recipes have changed, including the one for their bread, which is now flavoured with rosemary; none of us like it.

For the main course we all ordered spaghetti and meatball (yes, one giant meatball per plate!), wth extra sauce. It was pretty good; the meatballs were flavoured with fennel, which I will now try adding to my own meatballs. We left with 4 doggy bags, for another day.

Both dishes were delicious.

For dinner I made pumpkin soup, using a BBC recipe, eaten with the last of the bread rolls that Sheryl bought recently from Backspielhaus.

I was not very impressed with the BBC recipe, and will look for a better one next time I cook this.

Sheryl again had to work late. I don't know what she had for dinner, although we both had crackers with peanut butter and/or nutella when she got home).

For my dinner I went to Pequeños. I had a plate of Nachos Grande and a Weißbier.

The beer was good. They have now changed from Franziskaner to Erdinger, which is a great improvement.

The nachos were nothing special: not at all spicy, not even the jalapeños. Nowhere near as good as the last time we ordered them.

Our First Beers And Starter Platter

This evening we were at the Oktoberfest, at our usual table at the Armbrustschützenzelt.

Each person gets vouchers for 2 litres of beer, a share of a cold starter platter, and a hot meal.

We bought a couple of giant pretzels for the table.

Eventually Sheryl and I ordered a käsespätzle (the German equivalent of Mac and Cheese) to share, so we will have to go back to the Armbrustschützenzelt to cash in the second voucher.

Tonight I cooked a couple of frozen pizzas.

Sheryl had a spinach pizza, topped with red onion, feta and an egg; I had a salami and pepperoni pizza topped with red onion and an egg. I also had some coleslaw with mine.

Sheryl was very hungry after eating almost none of yesterday's dinner, and ate every scrap (normally she leaves at least one slice).

Ostrich Steak With Chips And Corn On The Cob

For dinner tonight cooked ostrich steaks that I bought a few weeks ago and froze; they were expensive!

I cooked chips (French fries - twice fried) and corn on the cob to accompany the steaks.

I really enjoyed my dinner, but after a couple of bites of her dinner, Sheryl started to feel ill. She spent the rest of the evening and much of the night throwing up. I think she now has a problem with steak, because when we went to the Rusticana for my birthday she also felt ill after sampling my filet steak.

Butternut Squash With Sun-Dried Tomatoes

Tonight I cooked a butternut squash risotto.

We didn't have very much butternut squash in the freezer. I also forgot to put sun-dried tomatoes in the risotto (normally I soak some in the white wine that I use later for cooking risotto, for about 30 minutes, otherwise they are too dry), but Sheryl found some sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil (they are the things that look like turds of some small animal, on the plate) which were a good substitute; in addition we forgot to buy more chili flakes (we usually sprinkle some on top of the risotto).

Despite all the screw-ups, the risotto was really good.

Crackers With Obatzda And Radishes

After our very substantial brunch, neither of us had enough appetite for a proper evening meal.

Instead we had crackers and the leftover Obatzda, pretzels and radishes.

Today we were invited for brunch in the apartment garden by our neighbours Isabelle and Markus.

As usual, I forgot to take photos.

We are starting to run out of ideas for food to take, so this time we suggested a Bavarian breakfast; the suggestion seemed very popular, especially with Markus and Erik.

We bought the Weißwurst (white sausage), the Obatzda, the pretzels and radishes; we also got some bread rolls from a nice bakery, salami sticks and some Gouda cubes.

Isabelle baked some muffins and made a fruit salad, and Markus got more bread and pretzels, and provided Weißbier (Erdinger, one of the good brands).

Isabelle, as expected, didn't eat any Weißwurst and drank no Weißbier, even though Markus got some alcohol-free for her.

Their son Erik told me he was going to "eat all the Weißwurst"; I thought this was an idle boast, but in fact he ate 2½! Not bad for a 5 year old.

For tonight's dinner I made a green salad (lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and avocado), topped with baked camembert, with home-made malt and walnut bread-rolls on the side.

It was lovely. We haven't had this for a while, because the good baking camembert has been hard to find (Sheryl bought 3 this time).

Cheesy Mushroom And Spinach Puff Pastry Roll

For our dinner tonight we (a joint effort) cooked a cheesy mushroom and spinach puff pastry roll (the picture shows one quarter of the roll).

It was lovely, although we could have managed to fit even more mushrooms in it (we used most of a large pack!).

We also forgot to sprinkle it with parmesan (although it has cheese inside as well).

As usual, I added about 2 tablespoons of aceto balsmico (balsamic vinegar) while sautéing the mushrooms; most of the liquid cooks down, and it adds a lot to the flavour.

Flammkuchen And Coleslaw

After our very substantial brunch we didn't have so much appetite for dinner. We decided to share a Flammkuchen (similar to a pizza, from the Alsace region).

Papadam And Pickles Thali And Naan

Tonight we had our regular curry dinner, deferred from yesterday.

We had a starter of papadams and pickles: hot lime pickle and brinjal (aubergine/egg-plant pickle).

For our main course we had a thali: two leftover curries (butter chicken and chicken badam pasanda) from the freezer, with some garlic naan.

Avocado Toast

After the large quantity of meat that we ate last night, we tried to have a more healthy brunch today: avocado toast.

Unfortunately, we were still hungry after the avocado toast, so we had some more toast with marmite and cheese. We then ate the two spare ribs that we brought home from the Rusticana last night.

Limoncello Spritz Gin And Tonic

Today is my birthday, so we went out for dinner at the Rusticana to celebrate.

We started off with some aperitifs: a Limoncello spritz for Sheryl and a Gin and Tonic for me.

Then we ordered food: spare ribs for Sheryl, a filet steak for me and a tomato and onion salad to share. I also ate a few of the ribs, and Sheryl ate some of my steak. Both dishes were lovely.

There were only two ribs left uneaten, which we brought home; too good to waste.

We drank a bottle of Malbec with our food.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening out.

For dinner tonight I made a green salad, which we ate with a half of a Hendl (rotisserie chicken, bought from a food truck at Arabella Park), and home-made malt and walnut bread-rolls.

Tortilla Chips And Chili Gü Mokaccino Cheesecake

Tonight I cooked a vegetarian chili (using fake meat and mixed beans), which we ate with tortilla chips, sour cream, grated cheddar and jalapeños.

For dessert we had some Gü Mokaccino cheesecakes; not quite as good as the salted caramel cheesecakes that we usually buy, but still very good.

Quiche Lorraine

This evening I cooked a quiche Lorraine and some sauté potatoes for dinner.

The quiche worked very well (moist but not runny) and was delicious.

As usual, we ate half of the quiche (two slices) and saved the rest for later in the week.

Sheryl had bought some ready-grated pecorino from the supermarket, which was very tasty, and very finely grated (which is exactly what this recipe needs), so it was absolutely delicious.

For brunch Sheryl made scones: some cheese (Gruyère, cheddar and parmesan) scones, and some cranberry and orange scones.

The cheese scones were very cheesy. The cranberry and orange scones were good but probably needed a little more orange zest.

Bacon Cheese Burger El Toro Burger

Tonight we went to see a movie, so beforehand we had a quick dinner at Beef Crew, just around the corner from the cinema.

Sheryl had a bacon cheese burger; I had an El Toro (spicy) burger; we shared a portion of French fries (chips).

We were very impressed; everything was very tasty, and my El Toro was really spicy.

Sheryl drank a glass of red wine and a sparkling water, and I had a beer.

Our brunch today was some croissants (bought frozen from the supermarket, because the Saphir bakery is closed for summer holidays) with some chili cheese.

The croissants were not bad, although they should have been baked for a few more minutes. The chili cheese could have used a little more sambal oelek.

Insalata Caprese And Home Made Bread Roll Truffle Pizza With Mozarella

Tonight we had another attempt at the dinner we planned more than a week ago: insalata caprese (with home-made bread-rolls) and truffle pizza.

Sheryl had recently been to Eataly and bought some nice mozzarella, which turned out to be twice the size of a normal mozzarella, so I used half to put on the pizza (which is normally too dry - normally we use some grated cheddar). The mozzarella was perfect on the pizza, and didn't suppress the flavour of the truffles.

Sheryl also bought some very nice (and expensive) olive oil, and some higher quality balsamico, so the salad dressing was really tasty.

Pizza With Parma Ham Spaghetti Carbonara

Tonight we were both feeling hungry, so we decided to go out for dinner.

We went to the nearby L'Angelo della Pizza (the pizza angel).

Sheryl ordered a pizza Parma (with Parma ham, shaved parmesan and Rukola/rocket/arugula). I ordered a spaghetti carbonara (something that I haven't had in over two years).

Sheryl enjoyed her pizza, but only managed to eat half (she brought the rest home for another day). My carbonara was very good.

We drank a bottle of red wine (a mediocre Montepulciano d'Abruzzo), and two bottles of sparkling water (San Pellegrino, of course).

We ate the cheese scones with cheese (some with cheddar and some with garlic and herb goat cheese) and some apricot preserve. Sheryl bought the apricot preserve and the goat cheese at the Dutch cheese shop on Marienplatz.

They were lovely; we were hungry and at all but one.

Sheryl Starters

Sheryl has been away in Rome on a leadership training course.

She is not in the centre of Rome, which means that there are lots of good and cheap (a meal, wine and water for €20) restaurants around.

She sent me these photos of some of her meals; she sent them on WhatsApp, which strips out the date-stamp (and other meta-data) so I don't know what she ate when.

Pictured are:

  • Some starters - Parma ham with Rukola/Rocket/Arugula and parmesan, and what looks like toast with cream cheese and either black olive paste or truffle paste,
  • A truffle pizza,
  • A glass of Limoncello,
  • A Cannoli (which was filled in the bakery when she ordered it).

In addition, I know that she ate Cacio e Pepe (sheep cheese and pepper) twice: once with ravioli and once with spaghetti. This is something we cook at home, and originally comes from Rome, so she was expecting it to be good, but it wasn't: not peppery enough.

For dinner tonight we had a thali of chicken redang and Paneer Palak, served with coconut rice.

The Paneer Palak was made a couple of weeks ago, and frozen. I added some extra spices, which did improve the flavour a bit.

We discovered that Paneer Palak doesn't freeze well: the cheese breaks up.

Truffle Pasta In Tomato And Truffle Sauce

For our dinner tonight I cooked truffle pasta in a tomato an truffle sauce, topped with grated parmesan.

We usually have loads left over, so this time I only cooked half the pasta (but all of the sauce), so it was the right amount and much more moist.

For tonight's evening repast I cooked omelettes, filled with spring onions, mushrooms, tomatoes and brie.

I made sauté potatoes as a side dish.

For dinner tonight we went to a beer garden (the Hofbräukeller).

We shared a giant pretzel and some Obatzda. We also had a dessert of some of the failed cupcakes that Sheryl made recently, drenched in rum and chocolate ganache.

We drank a Maß (litre) of beer each.

Salmon, Spinach And Cream Cheese In Puff Pastry With Mashed Potato

Tonight Sheryl made salmon with spinach and cream cheese in a puff pastry wrapping, baked in the oven.

I made some mashed potato to go with it.

It was lovely, although there could have been more spinach in it.

Crumpets

For brunch today I made crumpets.

I had a lot of trouble with them. Firstly, the batter took ages to rise. Then, I had huge problems with them sticking to the pan. The first batch I cooked in our new cast iron skillet, but they stuck really badly, so I switched to a non-stick frying pan, but even then they kept sticking (not as badly as in the skillet). That is why they look rather ragged in the photo.

Nevertheless, they tasted great.

Paneer Palak Butter Chicken And Naan

We had our regular curry evening on Saturday this week, instead of Friday, because Sheryl wanted to cook something.

She made a Paneer (cheese) Palak (spinach), which is one of her favourites when we eat at an Indian restaurant. I also heated up some butter chicken from the freezer, so, technically, we had a thali. We ate it with naan bread.

We both found the Paneer Palak disappointing: it needed more spices. We will try to improve the recipe, and then add it to my recipes page.

Chicken Doner Kebab With Cheese

We were at the shopping mall (Das Einstein) when it was time for brunch, so we decided to stop in at Ke Bazza and get kebabs: chicken doner kebabs with sheep's cheese

They didn't have any cheese already cut, so they gave us some large slabs of cheese instead.

For tonight's dinner I made a vegetable (broccoli, carrots, spring onions and mushrooms) stir-fry, with noodles, in a soy and oyster sauce.

It was delicious.

Crab Cakes With Mash And Tartar Sauce Chocolate Pudding

For dinner Sheryl made crab cakes. I made mashed potato and tartar sauce to accompany the crab cakes.

They tasted great, but for some reason were very crumbly (and difficult to pick up) this time.

For dessert Sheryl made some chocolate pudding using a Jello-brand powder that she bought in Chicago.

Poached Eggs With Rukola And Parma Ham On Bun

Today was a public holiday (Corpus Christi) in Bavaria, so we were able to have brunch together.

I made poached eggs.

I had mine on toast with some Parma ham; Sheryl had hers on the last of her brioche burger buns, with some Rukola/rocket/arugula and Parma ham (I utterly detest arugula).

For tonight's dinner I cooked pasta (fusilli) pesto, using the green (basil) pesto that Sheryl made yesterday.

I chopped up some cherry tomatoes, and grated some parmesan, for garnish.

Toasted Brie Bacon And Cranberry Sandwich

For today's brunch we made toasted sandwiched: brie, bacon and cranberry sauce sandwiches. This is a recipe that Sheryl found online, and had been wanting to try for a long time.

We both found them rather disappointing; just not a good complement of flavours.

We shared a plate of Fleischpflanzerl (meat patties made with a mixture of beef and pork) and chips (French fries), which were really good.

This was the batch that didn't rise so well, so they were a little dense, but still tasted good.

Garden Brunch May 2023

Today we were invited by our neighbours Isabelle and Markus for brunch. Since the weather was great, we had brunch in the garden.

We took some puff pastry bundles filled with ham, cheese and asparagus; a few of my sourdough bread rolls with caraway seeds; and some chocolate chip cookies (some with macadamia nuts, and some without). Isabelle and Markus provided more bread, a selection of cheeses (including a 2-year-old Reypenaer XO hard Dutch Gouda and some Wensleydale with blueberries), and fruit salad.

Because of their son Erik's birthday, we took several small presents for both the children. The big hit was a battery-powered bubble blowing machine, which Ann-Sophia really didn't want to share.

Quesadillas

Sheryl cooked tonight's dinner: quesadillas filled with home-made refried beans and grated cheese (mature cheddar).

I made a vegetarian chili to eat with the quesadillas, but I managed to burn it to the point of edibility, so we ate them with just sour cream and guacamole.

Scones Scones

Sheryl made scones for our brunch today: some cheese and some date scones.

We ate the cheese scones with butter and extra cheese; we ate the date scones with clotted cream and fig jam.

Unfortunately, Peter had to leave before Sheryl had even started the baking; his loss!

20th May 2023 - Dalmatiner Grill, Munich.

Grasevina Calamari, Spinach And Fries

Tonight we took Peter out to the Dalmatiner Grill, a Croatian restaurant about 5 minutes walk from home.

I had a Weißbier before drinking wine; Peter had a grappa before starting on the wine; Sheryl went straight to wine.

We ordered a bottle Josić Graševina Terra Pannonium (they only serve Croatian wine, so we always have to take the waiter's recommendation, as I know nothing about Croatian wine), which was very enjoyable.

For dinner, Sheryl had calamari, which was served with spinach and French fries (photo to the right). Peter had some kind of roast pork, served with potatoes and onions. I had a schnitzel wrapped around ham and whole boiled eggs, served with French fries.

There were complimentary glasses of grappa after we had eaten. We were tempted to order more wine, but instead decided to come home for more wine (and whiskey, of course).

We had a lovely meal.

Service is always fantastic at the Dalmatiner Grill, and very entertaining. The inside of the restaurant is lovely (although it looks a bit dodgy from the outside). For the summer they have a lovely garden, with tables and chairs for dining al fresco.

Unfortunately, the restaurant doesn't publish their menu online, so I can't give you that proper names of the dishes that we ate.

Pork, Onions And Potatoes Ham And Egg Wrapped In Schnizel

For our brunch today Peter went to the Saphir bakery and bought croissants, bread rolls (which Sheryl couldn't eat because they all had rye in them) and a Rosinenschnecke (raisin Danish pastry).

We ate the croissants and rolls with a selection of cheeses, salami and some salmon that Peter had bought.

It was delicious.

Our friend Peter, from Prague, came to stay for a couple of days, so there were three for dinner.

It was our regular curry evening, so I cooked a beef madras, served with rice and onion kulcha.

We had some vegetable samosas and vegetable pakoras for starters (although there was one chicken pakora mixed in with the vegetable pakoras!).

The beef madras was really excellent; I am really getting the hang of the recipe now, and will publish it on my recipe page soon.

Tonight's dinner was an experiment: "Egg Roll In A Bowl", using a recipe that Sheryl found on Pinterest.

It was utterly dreadful, and I won't be cooking it again.

For dessert we ate the last of the lemon tiramisu.

Steak Tartar With Fries Münchner Schnitzel And Potato Salad

Today is a public holiday in Bavaria (Ascension Day), so we made a trip to Nymphenburg. Before visiting the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition (see my News Blog) we had a gorgeous lunch at the Metzgerwirt (across the street from the entrance road to the Schloss Nymphenburg).

We had eaten there before, but had forgotten just how good it is. Also, some places that were good are not so nice when you return after a pause; most definitely not the case with the Metzgerwirt.

The menu is typical Bavarian food. The beer is Augustiner, one of the better Munich breweries, plus a few other beers.

I drank a Weißbier (Erdinger Dunkel) and Sheryl drank a Helles (Augustiner Lager).

For lunch Sheryl ordered the steak tartar and I ordered the Münchner Schnitzel (dunked in a mix of mustard and horseradish before coating with breadcrumbs). Sheryl ordered French fries (because she can't eat the rye bread that normally comes with the tartar); my schnitzel came with a potato and cucumber salad.

Sheryl had to mix the tartar herself (she is lazy, and prefers that the waiter does it for her).

The food was absolutely delicious. The French fries stayed crispy even when cold. The service was efficient and friendly. The surroundings are lovely.

Altogether, it was a great experience. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

For tonight's dinner Sheryl heated up frozen 4-cheeses pizzas. She topped hers with tuna, and mine with salami (pictured).

Club Sandwiches With Hummus Crisps

For dinner tonight we made club sandwiches. I usually cook the chicken and bacon, and Sheryl assembles the sandwiches.

Today, Sheryl forgot to add mayonnaise, so they were too dry, but still tasty.

I was supposed to make French fries (chips) to go with the sandwiches, but I forgot, so Sheryl ate hers with hummus crisps/chips, and I ate mine with salted crisps (I am not a fan of the hummus crisps).

Sheryl had a work dinner this evening, so I opted for something simple: poached eggs and baked beans on toast.

I was still rather peckish after the eggs and beans, so had some cheese (goat cheese with truffle) and crackers to fill me up.

For today's brunch we had raw vegetables (carrots, cucumber, celery, cherry tomatoes, radishes and spring onions) and crisps/chips (Jura-cheese flavoured crisps from Muji) with French Onion Dip.

It was delicious, and we ate it all.

Sheryl drank some fruit juice (orange with a little cranberry juice) and I had an apple juice mimosa.

For dinner tonight we made fish tacos (based on Rachel Ray's recipe video on YouTube), with marinaded (in chipotle) salmon.

In addition to the salmon, they were filled with avocado crema, slaw, feta, and radishes.

Monte Cristo Sandwich With Egg

For brunch today we tried something new: Monte Cristo sandwiches.

There are many recipes online for Monte Cristo sandwiches. We used the one by Chef John which has a poached egg on top (he therefore calls it a Madame Cristo).

They were really delicious; almost as good as Croque Madame.

Linguine Cacio E Pepe

Tonight's dinner was pasta (linguine) cacio e pepe.

Apart from being a little to peppery (my hand slipped while weighing the pepper), it was really excellent (probably the best ever). The pecorino was a different brand to usual, and much tastier; the sauce didn't stick to the pan. It tasted great.

For dessert we ate the last of the date muffins from the freezer (heated up in the microwave). There was only a tiny drop of caramel sauce to go with them, so we added some fresh cream too.

Omelette And Hash Brown Disaster

Tonight's dinner was a disaster.

I cooked an omelette, which stuck to the pan, didn't cook evenly, and broke up when serving.

I also cooked hash browns, which were partly burnt and partly underdone.

I was not pleased, although it tasted surprisingly good.

For tonight's dinner we made vegetarian burgers, made with "Beyond Burgers".

Sheryl's burger contained a veggie patty, rocket, soft goat cheese and fig jam; mine contained a veggie patty, mustard, Gruyère cheese, tomato and mayonnaise.

We ate them with some Jura cheese flavoured crisps/chips.

My burger bun was bought a few days ago; for Sheryl I made a burger bun sized malt and walnut bread roll when I baked bread last Saturday.

Baked Camembert On Olive Garden Salad With Malt And Walnut Bread Rolls

Dinner tonight was an Olive Garden salad, topped with baked camembert and served with freshly baked malt and walnut bread-rolls.

This afternoon I baked malt and walnut bread-rolls, because we needed bread to have with the planned salad tonight (deferred from Thursday).

We ran out of frozen bread-rolls some time ago, but I had to put off making more, because there was no room left in the freezer to store those we didn't eat immediately. We finally managed to eat enough meals from the freezer to make enough space.

For today's brunch I cooked poached eggs, served on English muffins (leftover from when I last cooked eggs Benedict, and which needed to be used up).

Sheryl added Rukola (rocket) to hers.

For our regular curry evening I heated up the leftover butter chicken from the freezer. We ate it with plain naan and onion kulcha.

It was great. I find that most curries are actually improved by being kept in the freezer for a week or two.

Spinach Pizza With Red Onion And Egg Salami And Pepperoni Pizza With Red Onion And Egg

We had planned to have an Olive Garden salad for dinner, but both of us forgot to make the dressing yesterday evening (the herbs need to soak in the dressing, normally overnight, to soften), so we ended up heating up a couple of frozen pizzas instead.

Sheryl had a spinach pizza topped with red onion and an egg; I had a salami and pepperoni pizza topped with red onion and an egg and some coleslaw on the side.

Vegetarian Chili With Tortilla Chips, Cheese And Sour Cream

For tonight's dinner I cooked a vegetarian chili (chili sin carne) which we ate with tortilla chips, grated cheddar and sour cream.

It was lovely.

Insalata Caprese Truffle Pizza With Extra Cheese

Our dinner tonight was a starter of insalata caprese with bread-rolls (to mop up the dressing of olive oil and aceto balsamico) and a shared truffle pizza topped with extra cheese (there is never enough cheese on the truffle pizzas).

Sheryl had to go shopping while I was preparing dinner, to buy the bread-rolls; we don't currently have any home-made bread-rolls; in the freezer, because we haven't had enough room in the freezer.

Duck Gröstl

For dinner tonight I used some of the leftover duck to make a Gröstl.

I used some duck, a few sausages, potatoes, spring onions and snow peas. I cooked it is duck fat. I served it, as per tradition, with a fried egg on top, and with mustard.

It was delicious.

For dessert we had some of Sheryl's home-made panna cotta; Sheryl had hers with some of the rhubarb, rosé wine and almond topping; I had mine plain.

Porridge With Pecans And Bananas

For today's brunch Sheryl made porridge (oatmeal) with pecans and bananas.

It turned out a little dry this time, so I poured a little cream on top of mine.

Roast Duck, Stuffing, Roast Veg. And Asparagus With Sauce Hollandaise

For our Easter Sunday dinner I cooked roast duck with fig and mushroom stuffing, served with roast potatoes and carrots, and asparagus with hollandaise sauce.

It was delicious.

For dessert, Sheryl had some of her home-made macarons, and I had another of the panna cotta that Sheryl made the other day.

Devilled Eggs Plus Dip With Raw Veg And Crisps

For brunch today we made devilled eggs, and French onion dip with raw vegetable and crisps/chips (lemon and chili flavoured chickpea crisps).

We had mimosas with the food: mine with apple juice, and Sheryl's with multi-vitamin juice.

It was all yummy.

Cocktails Nachos

For dinner we decided to go to Pequeño's, our local Mexican cantina.

We drank cocktails: I started with a jumbo caipirinha, and Sheryl had a normal-sized "sex on the beach".

We shared a plate of nachos with cheese and jalapños. They gave us some extra dips, to compensate for the delay in serving our food.

For main courses I had a Mexican burger, and Sheryl had a platter with samples of various main courses.

My burger was good. Sheryl enjoyed most of her dish, although she said the wings were not very spicy.

Cinnamon Roll With Icing

Today Sheryl baked cinnamon rolls filled with pecan pieces, and made cream-cheese icing to top them with.

They were good, but didn't rise as well as usual, for some reason.

Penne Al Arabiata

Tonight I cooked penne al Arabiata, using the last of the bizarre mini-penne that Sheryl bought a while ago.

It was, as always, good.

For dessert Sheryl had made panna cotta, and a topping with rhubarb, rosé wine and almond extract.

The panna was excellent (one of my favourite desserts), but I was not such as fan of the rhubarb topping; panna cotta has a delicate flavour that is easily overpowered.

Sheryl's Grapefruit Eggs Benedict And Bacon

Sheryl started her brunch with half a pink grapefruit (I am not allowed to consume grapefruit because of my statin tablets).

Then we had eggs benedict, on English muffins, with bacon.

I ate the last of the sauce with a spoon; too good to waste.

Margarita Chicken Enchiladas Verde With Sour Cream And Guacamole

Tonight I heated up the frozen chicken enchiladas verde, which we ate with guacamole and sour cream.

They never look pretty, once served, but always taste fantastic.

As usual when we eat Mexican food, we made margaritas to go with the dinner.

Bonito With Mash And Sweetcorn

When we were last at the local Asian store (the iShop) I spotted some frozen bonito steaks, for a very good price, and decided to give them a try (I had never eaten bonito before, and expected it to taste similar to tuna).

Tonight I braised them in white wine, and served them with mashed potatoes and sweetcorn.

The experiment was not a success. After one bite, Sheryl declared that the fish was too fishy, and left the rest for me. After eating about 1½ of the fish steaks, I came to the conclusion that they were not to my taste (the rest will be thrown away).

Falafel And Hummus Wrap Date Muffin With Caramel Sauce And Cream

For our dinner this evening we made falafel and hummus wraps, using some of Sheryl's home-made hummus with green olives.

They were very filling, and we only managed one wrap each.

For dessert, after a significant pause, we had the last of the date muffins (from the freezer), topped with home-made caramel sauce and cream.

Vegetable Pakoras And Samosas Butter Chicken And Mushrooms

We had guests for our curry evening today: Jonathan and Tracy (more were planned, but Alex and Andrea cancelled last minute).

I cooked a beef madras, a butter chicken and mushroom, and some rice.

Sheryl bought some vegetable pakoras and vegetable samosas for our starters, and naan bread and onion kulcha to eat with the main course.

For dessert we had some mango sorbet with raspberries, drizzled with vodka.

It was all delicious, and we were all full afterwards.

The kitchen is extremely messy, so I will be spending a few hours cleaning up tomorrow.

Omelette And Sauté Potatoes

For dinner tonight I cooked an omelette filled with red onion, mushrooms, tomatoes and feta. I cooked sauté potatoes to eat with the omelette.

Tuna Pizza Anchovy Pizza

Sheryl came home from work very late tonight, so we decided to have something quick for dinner: for Sheryl, a 4-cheeses pizza topped with tuna and red onion; for me a 4-cheeses pizza topped with anchovies, capers and red onion. I also had some coleslaw with my pizza.

Dim Sum Dim Sum

For dinner tonight I cooked a selection of dim sum: glutinous rice balls, kimchi dumplings, leek dumplings, a barbecue pork bun, some pork gyoza, some yakitori sticks (a new brand, as the Asian store has stopped carrying the brand that we used to buy), some spring rolls and some shao mei.

I cooked mushroom (a mixture of champignons and mixed "forest mushrooms") risotto for tonight's dinner.

It was lovely.

For today's brunch I made scrambled eggs.

Sheryl ate hers with the last brioche burger bun, and some green stuff (she tried to buy water cress, but the shop only had this substitute, which wasn't as good). I ate my eggs on toast, without the greenery.

For our weekly curry evening I heated up some chicken satay and some beef madras (the recipe will be added soon) from the freezer, for a thali. I cooked rice to go with it.

Veg. Stir Fry And Noodles

For our dinner tonight I cooked a vegetable stir fry with noodles.

I used carrots, red onions, broccoli, mushrooms and snow peas (also known as sugar peas, Mennonite peas and Chinese peas). I used soy ketchup (kecap manis), oyster sauce, garlic, ginger and sambal oelek for the sauce.

I thought it was lovely, but Sheryl felt that I was a little heavy-handed with the sambal, which made it too spicy for her.

Dinner tonight was very simple: I made pasta (fusilli) pesto, with pesto that Sheryl made yesterday.

Tonight I cooked cauliflower cheese for dinner. We ate it with some of the leftover "biscuits" from Sunday (the recipe made loads, so I had to throw some away after dinner).

It was very tasty.

Tonight I made a green salad and Sheryl made the feta baked in filo pastry.

We ate it with some of the leftover burger buns.

Beef Stew And BIscuit

This evening I cooked a beef stew, in part to use up some of the large stock of cooking wine that we have accumulated (we have had rather a lot of bad wines recently).

Instead of the usual dumplings, Sheryl made American "biscuits" (rather like scones), using the recipe from her new cookbook, The Preppy Kitchen.

It was lovely, although the stew had too much of a tomato flavour (I added too much wine, and then had to thicken the stew with extra tomato pureé).

There were way too many biscuits, so we will be eating the rest later in the week.

Baked Egg And Cheese In Hash Brown Cups

Today's brunch was something new.

We cooked baked eggs in hash brown cups (cooked in a muffin tin). We topped them with some grated Gruyère (which, for some reason, puffed up in the oven).

It was quite a lot of effort, and was nothing special; we won't be cooking them again.

Today I went across the street to the Saphir Bakery, to get croissants and a Danish pastry (Rosinenschnecke).

The quiche was OK, but not great, and contained bell peppers, so Sheryl couldn't eat it.

We ate the croissants with Obatzda, bought from Vinzenzmurr.

My burger contained a burger patty, soft blue cheese, mustard, tomato and mayonnaise in a rye and malt bun; Sheryl's contained a burger patty, soft goat-cheese, fig jam, and arugula/rocket in a brioche bun.

Tonight I was on my own for dinner, because Sheryl was away on a business trip, so I cooked a pizza (salami and pepperoni) from te freezer, and topped it with an egg.

Sheryl went to Ritzi, a Michelin star restaurant in Stuttgart, expecting a great French dinner. Sadly, after two bites of the meal pictured to the right, she had a serious allergic reaction, and couldn't eat or drink any more (more details in the 11th March entry on my News Blog).

Feta Wrapped In Filo Pastry Olive Garden Salad, Bread-Roll And Feta In Filo Pastry

Tonight's dinner was an experiment.

Sheryl made feta baked in filo pastry (with olive oil, fenugreek, sesame and a bit of honey), with an Olive Garden salad and some bought bread-rolls.

We thought that we should have made two (one each) of the feta in filo, but actually one to share was perfect.

The experiment was a success (it was yummy) and we will definitely cook it again.

Dessert was the last of the individual cheesecakes.

Baked Salmon With Pesto And Sauté Potatoes Cheesecake Again

For tonight's dinner Sheryl cooked (baked in the oven, in tin-foil) salmon on a bed of green beans, topped with green (basil) pesto and cherry tomatoes.

I made some sauté potatoes to go with the fish (some of which were a little overdone).

For dessert we again had individual cheesecakes. In the photo there are no hazelnut pieces on top, but we quickly decided that they make it taste much better, and added some.

Chicken Satay And Rice Cheesecake

For dinner today I cooked chicken satay and rice.

For dessert we had individual cheesecakes, on a speculaas cookie crumb base, topped with home-made caramel sauce, chocolate ganache and hazelnut pieces. They were cooked in glass ramekins saved from Gü desserts, which is why they look like Gü desserts, but they taste even better.

Avocado Toast

For today's brunch we had avocado on toast.

After the avocado was eaten, we had more toast. I had cheese and marmite on mine, and Sheryl had nutella and peanut butter on hers.

Weißbier And Wine Steak Tartar

Tonight, before going to the ballet, we had a quick dinner at Zum Franziskaner

I drank a Weißbier, and Sheryl had a glass of Merlot and some sparkling water.

For food Sheryl had steak tartar with French fries (normally it is served with rye bread, to which she is allergic), and I had a truffle Käsekrainer with very buttery mashed potatoes and champagne Kraut (like sauerkraut, but made with champagne instead of vinegar). Both dishes were superb.

We had room for dessert: a tiramisu for Sheryl and an apple strudel served with vanilla sauce and whipped cream for me. Both were very good.

For our dinner tonight I cooked pasta (capellini), and meatballs in a spicy tomato sauce.

As usual, there were some meatballs left over, but not really enough for another dinner, so I put them in the fridge to make meatball sandwiches for my lunches.

Earlier today, Sheryl made some date muffins and some caramel sauce. For dessert she heated up a pair of muffins with caramel sauce (which soaked into the muffins). They tasted wonderful.

For dinner, Sheryl made salmon cakes. I cooked mashed potatoes and asparagus, and made some tartar sauce to go with them.

Sheryl's hand slipped while adding spices to the salmon cakes, and also slightly over-browned them, but they weren't spoiled; if anything, they tasted even better than usual.

For dessert we had some chocolate dessert by , which was nothing special (most of their desserts are excellent).

Today was our weekly curry evening.

For starters we had papadams with pickles (brinjal/aubergine-pickle and hot lime pickle).

For our main course I had a second attempt at beef madras (which was much better this time), which we ate with rice.

For dessert we had some Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Ben and Jerry's has recently been taken over, and now they sell all-new recipes that are healthier and don't taste so good; all our old favourites are no longer available.

Chicken Pot Pie

For dinner I cooked a chicken pot-pie. I was also planning to cook some potatoes, but I didn't have the energy.

The pie was great (we ate half, and saved the rest for another day), even though I forgot to add garlic.

I made a bit of extra effort to make a little pastry leaf to go on top of the pie, and Sheryl said "Oh look, you made a little heart." I don't think my artistic talents are appreciated.

Cheese Scones And Date Scones

Sheryl made two types of scones for our brunch today: some cheese scones and some date and cinnamon scones.

We ate the cheese scones with butter and some extra cheese (Gruyère); we ate the date scones with clotted cream and fig jam.

For our dinner tonight we made a cherry tomato and goat cheese galette.

As usual, we were unable to wait until it was completely cold (it is supposed to be eaten cold) before eating it.

For brunch today I made scrambled eggs on toast.

Sheryl also ate half a grapefruit.

Thali And Garlic Naan Weißbier

For our regular Friday curry evening I heated up two frozen leftover curries (a butter chicken and a chicken badam pasanda) for a thali. We ate the thali with garlic naan.

As with most curries, I drank a Weißbier (Scheider Weisse original [Tap 7]) with it.

It was really delicious.

For dessert we ate some mini-Krapfen (doughnuts) that Sheryl brought home from work, which were very good.

Shared Krapfen

For dinner tonight I made a green salad (lettuce, cucumber, tomato, avocado and feta) topped with tandoori prawns, which we ate with some home-made sour dough bread-rolls (sorry, Sno photo of this). It was lovely, and we finished it all.

For dessert Sheryl had bought two Krapfen (doughnuts), one Germknödel and one raspberry, which we cut in half for sharing. Unfortunately, the raspberry one had got accidentally sprayed with a cleaning spray in the shop, and wasn't edible; the Germknödel Krapfen was great, though.

Dim Sum Dim Sum

Dinner tonight was the dim sum that we had planned for yesterday.

We had glutinous rice balls (pictured left), which were not great (kept in the freezer too long); spring rolls, leek dim sum, shao mei, kimchi dumplings (for Sheryl - I don't like them), duck gyoza (all in the photo below); and a barbecue pork bun (to the right) for me.

It is quite a while since we had dim sum, and most of the dim sum has been in the freezer too long, and is no longer at its best. We will have to have a clear-out.

Tonight's dinner plans had to be changed at the last minute, because Sheryl got home very late from work, so we needed something quick and easy.

We cooked some frozen pizzas (again!). Sheryl had a spinach pizza topped with feta, red onion and an egg; I had a salami and pepperoni pizza topped with red onion and an egg.

Tonight I cooked vegan "meat" balls in spicy tomato sauce with capellini.

The vegan fake-meat balls were OK, but not as good as real meat-balls (which I have been having cravings for ever since).

For brunch today Sheryl started with half a grapefruit (which I can't eat as they clash with my statins). We then had cheese (mature cheddar) and branston-pickle toasted sandwiches.

Enchiladas Verde

Tonight we heated up the enchiladas in salsa verde from the freezer.

They may not look so great in the photo, but they tasted great.

We ate them with guacamole (bought, not home-made) and sour cream.

Friday is normally our curry night, but I was somewhat unwell earlier today, so we decided to eat something less challenging to my stomach.

We opted to cook frozen pizzas. We only had 4-cheeses pizzas. Sheryl had hers with some Parma ham and an egg; I had mine with Anchovies, capers and an egg.

For dinner tonight I cooked prawns in batter, in Singapore-style sweet and sour sauce, and rice.

This is something we had planned for several weeks, but kept cancelling for various reasons.

We really enjoyed it.

Medaglioni Al Tartufo In Spicy Tomato Sauce

Tonight I cooked medaglioni (similar to ravioli) al tartufo (truffle), bought from the supermarket, in spicy tomato sauce.

We were actually impressed. The medaglioni had a strong truffle taste, even though they came from a down-market store.

It was very enjoyable.

Dessert

For dinner tonight I made an Olive Garden salad, topped with baked camembert cheese, and served with home-made sour dough bread-rolls.

The salad was lovely.

For dessert Sheryl had bought a Krapfen (doughnut) and some chocolate thing (the bakery was almost out of doughnuts). Sheryl was not pleased with the chocolate creation; despite an assurance that it didn't contain cherries (which she hates), it did.

Quiche With Sauté Potatoes

For dinner tonight I cooked a salmon, leek and mushroom quiche, and some sauté potatoes.

As you can see from the photo, the quiche was a little crumbly, but tasted lovely.

Croissants And Cheeses

For brunch today we decided to try croissants from a different French bakery (recommended by our neighbour Isabelle).

We ate them with selection of cheeses.

We also shared a Rosinenschnecke (raisin Danish) and an apple turnover.

The croissants were not as good as the ones we usually buy (not enough butter), and the Danish was dry, but the apple turnover was excellent.

We will probably only buy croissants at that bakery when the one across the street is closed.

For dinner Sheryl made quesadillas (filled with mature cheddar cheese and home made refried beans).

We ate it with a vegetarian chili from the freezer, sour cream and shop-bought guacamole.

I think this is my favourite breakfast.

Sheryl put some Rucola (rocket) on her muffin before I added her poached eggs. I hate rocket, but Sheryl loves it.

For dinner tonight I cooked cordon bleu, chips (French fries) and braised cabbage (with a little onion).

I thought about adding caraway seeds to the braised cabbage, but decided that Sheryl might object, but then, while we were eating, she said "this would be better with some caraway seeds, so I will add them next time.

For brunch today we were invited downstairs by Isabelle and Markus.

We took some prosciutto and asparagus puff pastry bundles and some of my home-made sour dough bread rolls. We also took a bottle of rosé prosecco.

Our hosts provided more bread, cheeses, and various fruit.

Because it was Ann-Sophia's second birthday, there was also a birthday cake, bought from Käfer, which was excellent.

Croissant And Paté

For brunch today we had croissants from the Saphir bakery, with some of the paté that Peter brought us.

Sheryl was not so impressed with the paté (she likes smoother paté), so she switched to jam and nutella for the second croissant.

I peeled the mango that we had, but it wasn't good and I threw it away; instead we ate some mandarins.

For dinner tonight I made an Olive Garden salad and a tuna pasta salad.

It was delicious, but there was too much to finish (so it was saved for tomorrow's lunch), as we needed to save room for dessert.

It is now the season (Lent) for Krapfen (doughnuts) in Germany. Sheryl bought us a Himberger (raspberry doughnut) and a Germknödl doughnut for dessert, which we shared. They were nice, although not as fresh as they could have been.

We were both exhausted after the flight home, and not able to do any real cooking, so I heated up some frozen pizzas.

I had the beef, which was dull but edible.

Sheryl was unable to get an assurance that the meals contained no peppers (bell-peppers/capsicum), so they gave her an extra bread roll (wow!).

We each had a glass of red wine and some sparkling water; there were no top-ups on the drinks.

Kaelyn's Steak And Chicken Dinner

Tonight Sheryl's niece Kaelyn cooked steak and chicken, with biscuits, roast potatoes, green beans and asparagus for the whole family at Sheryl's parents' house.

There were also mozzarella sticks and deep fried mushrooms.

For dessert Kaelyn and her sister Ashley went out to get ice-cream.

There was a disaster at the Finkbone household this morning: the coffee maker broke (after Sheryl had made herself a coffee). I was feeling extremely rough (hung over and extremely tired), and desperately needed a coffee, so Sheryl's mum went out to McDonald's for some coffee; she also brought me an egg McMuffin and Sheryl a bacon, egg and cheese McGriddle.

The coffee helped me a bit, but I have been struggling to update my Food Blog because I am still far from 100%.
