This report on Interesting Engineering describes how the world's biggest wind turbine, in China, has failed. The windmill was announced with great fanfare as being not only the world's largest, but also as being Typhoon-proof, on the basis that the prototype survived super typhoon Yagi in September. Now, it seems that the turbine was not so robust after all. It comes as no surprise to me that Chinese engineering is not all it is claimed. I have seen some very shoddy examples, e.g. in Jakarta (Indonesia), where the suspended road that runs through the city looks more like a roller-coaster than a road; I felt nervous walking under it because it looks as if it could collapse at any moment. China has built, and continues to build, lots of infrastructure (roads, railways, bridges, etc.) in various African countries, and these countries are being saddled with enormous debt for this infrastructure. I have to wonder whether any of the infrastructure will last as long as the debt. |
