In this article on The Free Press, the author seems genuinely surprised to realise that much food and drink is the US is not really safe to eat and drink, due to food colourings, pesticides, preservatives, sweeteners,, pollution, hormones, etc. This is not news to most Europeans, who have been made aware by a long history of news and supply issues:
Given what they actually do, I believe that the EPA should be called the Economic Protection Agency (they protect the economy and big corporations more than they protect consumers), and the FDA should be called the Food And Drug Apologists. The root of the problem is that influence on government policy and on the FDA and EPA is wielded by lobbyists rather than consumers. As a result, food and drink labeling laws are much less strict in America than in Europe, so you can't protect yourself simply by reading the labels. If my government is telling me that US food and drink is unsafe, maybe US consumers should also be paying attention |
