I was surprised by this report on View From The Wing. The article describes the outcome of a law suit: a couple took a vacation at Club Med hotel in France that promised a gourmet experience and were disappointed by the food; they were awarded compensation of around £4,000 (about $5,000). My surprise is not due to their bizarre choice of Club Med for a gourmet holiday, but due to the small amount of the award. Britain doesn't have the mechanism of punitive damages that exists in the US, so court cases usually result in smaller compensation awards, but even so, £4,000 seems far too low. This couple had their vacation ruined, and probably won't be able to take another until next year. Their fun and relaxing holiday turned into a complex and stressful nightmare, and I feel that a more substantial payment is in order. |
